9 generations in wine (with roots in the Cataluña region of Spain since 1752), the Carrau family - in Uruguay since 1930 - were first to export their wines & in 1973 introduced the idea of using the country's typical grape, Tannat, to make top reserve reds. Francisco Carrau's innovative winery in the Cerro Chapeu region is built inside a hill, practicing minimal manipulation. The Carrau vineyards are located in the highest Environmental Sustainability Index of the world (per a 2005 Yale study).
