OUR COMPANY

Michael R. Downey Selections (“Downey Selections”) is a family-run, regional, Virginia-based wine company that imports wine directly from 25 high-quality Italian producers and also distributes a wide selection of renowned French wines, with exciting additions from Spain, Uruguay, Germany, California, & Oregon.  Downey Selections began operations in 1998.

Founder Michael Downey worked in various realms of the Washington DC-area wine business for nearly 30 years, until his death in 2002.  Michael always looked for producers who practice what might be called an “enlightened traditional approach” to winemaking; whose wines offer regional typicity and have a reasonable price/quality ratio.  Michael believed that the search invariably begins with finding the “right” people behind the wines.  Most of the estates that Downey Selections represents are quite small (and usually family-run).  In some cases, the wines are little-known abroad (or very rare), but all of the producers enjoy a particularly high reputation within their respective regions.

Over the years, Michael and family repeatedly visited most of the major wine-producing areas of the world (particularly visiting Italy 2 - 3 times each year), which enabled the Downey family to cultivate a personal and enduring relationship with each wine producer.  In turn, many of the producers come to the U.S. each year to support the market:  visiting customers, holding winemaker dinners, and educating sales teams.

Carrying on Michael’s tradition of top quality wines and personal service, Downey Selections has continued to thrive since 2002 under Downey family ownership, managed by Michael’s wife Peg, son Brennan, daughter Shannon, & son-in-law Guillaume.
